Career story of Marcellus Mbah

Career story

What keeps you motivated?

I am motivated by conducting research with real societal implications, knowing that my work can inform policies, shape practices, or amplify the voices of local communities I engage with. This sense of purpose excites me, as it allows me to contribute, even at a micro level, to making the world a better place.

What helps you find a research question or project idea?

For me, research is not about reinventing the wheel but about identifying gaps or areas lacking in existing or prior studies. Particularly, I am interested in addressing those gaps that can lead to outcomes for local communities. Once I identify such a gap, I develop research questions that connect to clear, actionable objectives and determine how best to address them.

How do you choose the method to collect data?

I choose methods that align with my research questions and offer the best prospects for addressing them effectively and efficiently. I also take into account practical constraints such as access to research sites, time, and available capacity or resource.

If you could give your past self advice when you were learning about research, what would it be?

Always choose a research topic you genuinely enjoy. Passion sustains you through the inevitable challenges along the way and keeps you focused on your goals and sense of accomplishment. Additionally, if you plan to engage in collaborative research, choose your team carefully, not only based on expertise, but also on shared values and team spirit.
